Greetings, and welcome to MD News San Antonio. For years, physicians have known that hearing plays a role in many seemingly unrelated issues, including dementia, falls and walking issues. However, because hearing loss is usually a gradual decline, it's difficult for patients to make the connection between hearing issues and health problems. By the time a patient discusses the problem with his or her doctor — and then acts on the referral for a hearing screening — it may be difficult to effectively manage the issue. Physicians Hearing Network (PHN) hopes to change all that. By bringing hearing tests into the primary care providers' offices and making it easy to test patients' hearing during annual physicals or sick visits, PHN can diagnose patients sooner in the hearing loss process and more quickly provide the interventions that may protect some of their hearing. In our cover story, learn how this is possible. Tax planning should always be top of mind for physi- cians, and in this issue, two experts at Sol Schwartz & Associates help us examine some strategies that will help these professionals better understand net income for their practice and their personal taxes. While women make up more than half of those enrolled in medical school, only about 21% of general surgeons are women. Intuitive Surgical, the creator of the sa Vinci Surgical System, wants to empower women to be more involved in leadership roles in robotic surgery. Intuitive recently hosted its first-ever Women In DaVinci Surgery Symposium in San Diego, and Susan Crockett, MD, local gyn robotic surgeon and founder of Virtuosa Gyn, attended. In this issue, you'll learn about her impressions of the symposium and the future of women in robotic surgery.
