from the Publisher Richard Keene PUBLISHER Central New York T much for reading the May/June issue of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. HANK YOU VERY Our cover story features Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) and its new location at the Heritage Commons building in North Syracuse. The location unites SOS neck and back pain specialists and foot and ankle specialists in one location. It is always a good sign when the increased volume of patients necessitates opening a new center. The site shares space with SOS strategic partner New York Spine & Wellness Center and geographically serves a large patient volume from the northern suburbs. SOS, as readers of this magazine know, continues to grow. In this issue, Jerry Hoffman, Executive Vice President of the Onondaga County Medical Society, comments on the impact the passage of the New York State budget will have on physicians. Jerry points out that a significant win was defeating Gov. Cuomo's proposal to decrease funding for the Excess Liability Program and to reduce the number of eligible physicians by 60%. Loss of this coverage would be a disaster for physicians, especially those in high-risk specialties, such as anesthesia, neurosurgery and OB/GYN. Once again, we have need to examine why commonsense caps for noneconomic damages cannot be enacted in New York. Is it that lawmakers in the more than two dozen other states that have such caps are simply more sagacious than our folks in Albany? Is it possible they value their physicians and the awe-inspiring work they do every day more than our leaders value our physicians? You may make those arguments, but ultimately the specter of self-interest manifests itself. Lawmakers find a good many lawyers within their ranks. These lawyers may benefit from a lack of caps. It is time for Albany to wake up and realize what a tremendous asset we have in the quality of health care in New York. This is led, of course, by our tremendous physicians. After more than two decades as a newspaper publisher and business CEO, I know getting things done in this state can be arduous. In this important time in our nation's history, we should be making decisions that assist — rather than hinder — our medical professionals as they go about their business. In my role today, I interact with physicians daily. It is my personal observation that we could not do much better, and the alternative of not having these skilled professionals would be a poor outcome indeed. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community. We love to receive nominations for cover stories, current news from your organization and feedback on articles.
