+ Upon returning home, do not take your suitcases into the house right away. Remove your clothes from the suitcase and wash everything in the hottest water possible. Put your suitcase in a black plastic bag and let it sit in the sun for a few days. There is truly no way to prevent bed bugs from entering your establishment. However, if you own or manage a business where frequent transient, client or guest turnover is an issue, there are steps to take to alert you that bed bugs have been introduced. Having an early monitoring detection program in place, along with educating management, housekeeping and maintenance personnel about what to look for, is a key part of this process. Contact a professional pest control specialist if signs of bed bugs are found. DO NOT attempt to control a bed bug problem on your own. When you call a pest control company regarding bed bug treatment, bear in mind the following: + Effective bed bug control requires three treatments. Each should be done two weeks to one month apart. Verify that the price you are given is for all three treatments. + What will the treatment consist of? Bed bugs require a signif ica nt amount of treatment and time. The company should provide you with information on preparation that must be done by you before treatment. + Is the company registered with — and its technicians certified by — the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation? You can check registration and certification status at www.dec.ny.gov. + If you or anyone in the home or business has any health issues — especially respiratory problems — make sure you inform the pest control company. The company should send you the product information so that you can check with your physician before interior treatment is done. Depending on the health issue and the type of treatment, some physicians may require you to be out of the home for 12–24 hours. The most important factor in choosing a pest control company is your comfort level. Do you feel the company has answered your questions thoroughly? A reputable company will work with you to ensure that your pest problem is eliminated, and it will answer all your questions.
