Hello, and welcome to the Regional Insights edition of MD News Mid-Penn. As you read through this issue, you will find that our hospitals are always at the forefront of technology and always putting our patients first, whether it's providing new telehealth options, offering newer, safer options for procedures or helping patients understand their treatment plans. It is of utmost importance that our patients stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Penn State Health OnDemand provides a social-distancing opportunity to still receive care. Penn State telehealth originally started as a way to deliver remote care to patients, and it has gradually expanded to what it is today. Penn State Health OnDemand allows patients to be connected with doctors 24/7 via video calls and to schedule virtual meetings. It is possible to receive the same level of care as if you were visiting your physician in person. WellSpan's internationally recognized TAVR program is offering transcatheter aortic valve replacement for patients at all severe aortic valve stenosis surgical risk levels now, which opens the door for younger patients to receive the procedure. There is also a second incision approach available as well. Bioprosthetic valve fracturing is also a new option. WellSpan is involved in multiple trials, allowing physicians to stay at the forefront of technology. Because of this, risks for patients are down. It may be scary to find an unsuspecting tumor, but it does not have to be as frightening as it seems. Physicians at UPMC are educating their patients about pituitary adenomas, which do not produce any symptoms at the beginning of the diagnosis. They will cause health issues along the road, but the physicians provide information about medication that may help. If the tumor does have to be removed, the neurosurgeon will use a minimally invasive technique, which offers a safer method. Our national feature takes a look at emotional intelligence in clinicians, including how it might be effectively taught and the benefits of high EI for clinicians and their patients. We also get a look into a family practice physician's perspective during COVID-19. She speaks about what it is like to shoulder the responsibility, while being aware of their own risks and handling the added stress and anxiety in patients. It is great to see advances and adaptations in medical treatments and I hope you enjoy reading about the progress.
