from the Publisher W May issue of MD News and a brand-new era for the magazine. e lco M e to th e When we started our South of Boston edition 12 years ago, the health care community was very much a local story. Most of the articles we published were about local community hospitals and were intended to inform physicians in their immediate vicinity about the work they were doing. As time has gone by, though, the story has changed to a more regional one. Driven by diverse factors such as health Michael Jones care reform, the recent wave of hospital consolidations and PubLIShEr even the completion of the Big Dig, the notion that both Greater Boston patients and physicians are now traveling throughout the MJoNES@MDNEWS.CoM region to receive and provide care is far more common than (508) 888-1502 it was 12 years ago. For at least the last three years, I have wanted to reflect that changing landscape by merging the local editions of MD News into one region-wide magazine. The trouble was, every time I brought the subject up, the folks in the accounting department would say, "Great idea, but the increased circulation would mean you have to double or triple your rates for advertising and custom content." Now, though — thanks to new technology, economies of scale and a creative, new management team at our head office — we have the ability to publish a single Greater Boston edition that will be circulated throughout the entire region as the premier direct-to-physician magazine in the area. To say that I'm excited about this would be an understatement. I believe this decision will reinvigorate the magazine, allowing us to publish a far more diverse array of stories and profiles and offer a more effective marketing vehicle for our many loyal clients. In effect, the new MD News gives both readers and advertisers the best of both worlds — still driving referrals among the local physician community but also offering a far more visible and prestigious platform to showcase local doctors and hospital service lines. If you have a story you feel would be of interest to this newly expanded, regional readership, feel free to contact me. I look forward to this new chapter for MD News and to telling many more of your stories to what is now an even larger physician community. On a personal note, I have covered the physician community for years and always knew Boston was home to some of the finest doctors and caregivers in the world. But the way the city's hospitals and medical personnel responded in the hours after the Boston Marathon bombings was beyond impressive. It makes me proud to be connected, albeit in a very small way, to the medical community in this city. MD News will continue to try to do justice to the incredible work you do as the city moves forward and starts to heal.
