PHOTOGRAPHY: STEVEN WINTER PROJECT: Lincoln, MA BUILDER: Essex Restoration ARCHITECT: Mass Architect LLC, Nicholas M. Paolucci, AIA This house was originally built in the 70s. Our client, relocating from her New Hampshire farmstead, brought us in to totally renovate the design. Essex Restoration worked with architect Nicholas Paolucci. Nick worked closely with the new homeowner to understand her needs and vision. "Nick is exceptional at what he does—smart, creative and a fast thinker." He was able to design a space that was really personal to her. The key component of the project was structural. Existing walls and posts on the first floor challenged the overall flow of space, while likewise hindering the flow of sunlight. By providing structural reinforcement, the team was able to open up the space. By eliminating dead space on the second floor and adding skylights lower on the roof, sunlight was finally able to penetrate the first floor. It now floods the space, lighting up what had previously been dismally dark. The client, before leaving her New Hampshire farm, had some trees cleared. The Essex Restoration team milled the wood and used them in constructing the living room built-ins. Before Now open and full of light A new closet with a woodburning stove make up a quaint, warm, open room. 1 8 | BOSTON.BUILDERARCHITECT.COM Builder+Architect GREATER BOSTON, CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS COVER FEATURE
