W ANDERING SALEM'S ESSEX Street is akin to a walkabout through time, through centuries of archi- tectural and building history, depicted in both home and church. The journey, initiating in the late 1600s, spans four centuries of architectural style, encompassing Post-Medieval, Georgian, Federal, Greek, Gothic, and Colonial Revivals, Italianate, Second Empire, Queen Anne, and eventually concluding with the contemporary New Englander. To glimpse any one of these is to provoke the mind: to examine these testaments to a different way of life, to wonder about the circumstances that brought them into being and to marvel at their longevity. The restoration on the featured home was so complete and exhaustive, it could be construed as a new build. It was this custom rebuild that inspired Walter to expand the firm's building pursuits to more regularly include custom builds like this one. —DEVRO CUSTOM BUILDERS PHOTOGRAPHY: GREG PREMRU PROJECT: Weston, MA BUILDER: Walter Beebe-Center, Devro Custom Builders ARCHITECT: Treff LaFleche, LDA Architecture & Interiors Historic, luxur y, and high-tech, features craftsmanship, durability, sustainability. This home is one of three homes selected by the USGBC LEED Homes Award judges as a recipient in the Outstanding Single -Family Project categor y. It won U.S. Green Building Council 2020 LEED Homes Awards: Recipient, Outstanding Single-Family Project and DOE Zero Energy Ready Home 2020 Housing Innovation Awards: Winner, Custom Homes on Spec. Walter Beebe-Center helped the client, Green Phoenix Development, locate and purchase a 1897 farmhouse in Weston that hadn't been updated in years. In collaboration with the client and architect, Walter Beebe-Center of Essex Restoration/Devro Custom Builders handled all the permitting to certify the home as a LEED Platinum and net-zero ready home. They lifted the house temporarily and replaced the entire foundation allowing 10-foot ceiling height in the lower level. "This house is like a Tesla car," says Walter Beebe-Center ... "high performance heat pumps, smart house integrated technology, super insulated, healthy indoor air quality, and data-loggers for continuous monitoring. The finished home is a beautiful and luxurious home. I felt very lucky for the opportunity to collaborate with Steve Snider of Green Phoenix Development. Steve wanted to create a project that was high-performing, better-looking and more functional than what's commonly available. That's exactly the kind of work I like to do," says Walter Beebe-Center. A 14.72-kilowatt solar PV array of 46 panels helps power the house. BOSTON.BUILDERARCHITECT.COM Builder+Architect GREATER BOSTON, CAPE COD AND THE ISLANDS | 7
