Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders. Welcome to The Innovation Edition of MD News Mid-Penn. I am delighted to share perspectives from the region's leading healthcare providers about forward-looking ways they are broadening local access to expert care. Penn State Health recently opened a new 56-bed NICU for the hospital's smallest patients. Jeffrey R. Kaiser, MD, MA, Chief of the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Penn State Children's Hospital, and the team at the Level IV NICU regularly meet to assess current guidelines and to develop new ones for the Small Baby Unit. Protocols set in place are evidence-based and govern care delivery at the Children's Hospital. UPMC Pinnacle's multi-speciality team is focused on improving lung care for patients through innovative tools and techniques used to treat and manage conditions, including emphysema, COPD and lung cancer. Another feature takes a look at state-of-the-art imaging technology at WellSpan York Hospital & WellSpan Health and Surgery Center in Hanover. This advanced technol- ogy includes a new MRI suite with two sophisticated MRI systems and represents a $14 million investment in imaging. These MRI systems provide diagnostic treatment and support to clinicians and patients in the region for multiple medical specialties. One of our national features takes a look at the future of telemedicine, which has grown steadily over the years and even more so recently with the emergence of COVID-19. Going forward, certain aspects of care may greatly benefit from the use of telemedicine. Our other nationa l feature looks at the impact of COVID-19 on the medical community, including difficulties for clinicians, telemedicine crossroads and more.
