Central New York 05-820 Thank you very much for reading the Nov.–Dec. edition of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. First, we would be remiss if we did not thank all of the physi- cians, nurses and healthcare professionals of all stripes, who are fighting the ongoing pandemic. Thank you so much for what you do for us all. On that front, our cover story deals with the Neuroscience Program at State University of New York Upstate Medical University. At SUNY Upstate Medical University, neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroscience researchers work together to offer a robust spectrum of neurological solutions to the Central New York community. Situated in the vast territory of Central New York, SUNY Upstate Medical University is the region's main referral center for specialized medical care and the only one to have a comprehensive neuroscience program. Our interior feature highlights Andrew Wickline, MD, and his battle to treat orthopedic surgery patients with little to no opioid support. Dr. Wickline's work was published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Experience & Innovation in July and co-authored with Maryann Stevenson, RPh. The study focused on 386 patients who underwent a total knee arthroplasty. During a four-month period, the patients received education, home-based physical therapy and a continuous adductor canal block with ropivacaine during surgery. Pain levels were recorded pre-surgery and through the first three postoperative days, then again at three weeks, six weeks and 12 weeks post-surgery. The study found that 86% of patients were able to get through the 90-day period with 10 opioid pills or less. In addition, 85% did not need formal physical therapy, saving them money and reducing their exposure to COVID-19. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience, one with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community. We love to receive nominations for our cover stories, current news within your organization and feedback on articles.
