Greetings, physicians and healthcare leaders. Welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. Penn State Children's Hospital's well-anticipated expan- sion is to be completed this November. The expansion will allow pediatrics to gain approximately 126,000 square feet of space. The number of labor and delivery rooms will grow, and there will be 18 postpartum/antepartum rooms on the seventh floor and 18 postpartum rooms on the sixth floor. In addition, the NICU will grow and have capacity for 56 babies. With the expansion comes additional maternal fetal medicine services to include fetal interventions. Patients will also have comforts of home with larger rooms and lounges. Read more in our cover feature about all the changes and additions to come. We feature the Penn State Children's Hospital Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Division, which has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report. Each pediatric nephrologist is focused on patient education and resources. We also take a look at Penn State Children's Hospital's expanded Hematology services, added when hematologist- oncologist Jonathan Bernstein, MD, MS, joined the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. The department is equipped to treat hematologic diseases with multidisciplinary care. In addition, the NICU at Penn State Children's Hospital is highlighted. It is the only Level IV NICU in the area, with neonatologists available at all times. The hospital has the only ECMO program in the region for babies, in addition to offering total body cooling for babies who have a lack of oxygen at birth. Our clinical section on pediatric health examines physical activity guidelines for children and what pediatricians should do to help families combat childhood sedentary behavior while guiding children to develop healthier habits.
