"We knew that his future in the pro- gram was bright, but he just hadn't won the job right away," Podbelski said. "He was continually working hard and getting better at all phases of his game aside from hitting. He had to perform and earn it, and then we couldn't keep him out of the lineup. "That's really the nature of any fresh- man cracking a line- up or a rotation at a good college pro- gram — working hard and taking advantage of opportunities. He had a true vision of becoming a better all-around player and worked really hard to get himself in that po- sition."
