BY ANGELA WILLIAMS STONY BROOK CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL HA S BEEN PROVIDING SPECIALIZED CHILDREN'S HE ALTH SERVICES IN SUFFOLK COUNT Y FOR DECADES NOW, BUT RECENT ADVANCEMENTS OFFER PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES A TRULY HOLISTIC E XPERIENCE. IT'S A TRUISM that when children require health care, they cannot be cared for simply as "small adults." They require access to treatments and techniques that are geared toward their unique needs as they grow and develop. Behind this truism lies the need for children to have access to a wide range of pediatric specialty care. As the only dedicated children's hospital in Suffolk County, Stony Brook Children's Hospital is committed to providing that level of care — offering services and capabilities that encompass each child's physical, social and psychological needs. Carolyn Milana, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children's, has been part of the hospital's evolution over the years. "Stony Brook was always a tertiary care center offering pedi- atric services, but we needed to expand to fully meet the needs of the children and families of Suffolk," Dr. Milana says. "What we were really looking to do was to build a children's hospital, along with outpatient offices throughout the island, that could provide sophisticated pediatric care for families that was close to home." How Stony Brook Children's Hospital Is Expanding and Enhancing Children's Health Services in Suffolk County Carolyn Milana, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Children's, discusses patient's image with resident J. Ryan Aubry, MD. 0 6❱❱❱❱❱ C O V E R F E A T U R E
