THE BIG PICTURE END INSIGHT OUTDOOR FACTS & FIGURES Snowshoe sales were up +279% in Oct. 2020 vs. Oct. 2019. NPD Group Ramped up demand and participation in fishing, camping and watercraft recreation contributed largely to a +58% increase in fourth quarter sales at Johnson Outdoors. Transit/fitness bike sales were up +126% in Oct. 2020 vs. Oct. 2019. NPD Group Outdoor Product sales grew +35% at Vista Outdoors in Q2 ended Sep. 27, 2020 with Outdoor Recreation (CamelBak, Camp Chef, Bushnell) up (+61%) and Action Sports (Bell, Giro, Krash, Others) up (+16%) year-over-year. Backcountry-related equipment sales in the U.S. grew a combined +76% in the opening months of this year's snow season (Aug.- Oct. 2020) year-over-year. NPD Group Grassroots Outdoor Association estimates its retailers' sales were down -2.75% year over year in sales in 2020 vs. 2019 — a positive turn of events considering the near- complete stoppage of retail sales for many stores in spring 2020. (In March 2020, Grassroots retailers' sales were down -33% and April sales were down -60%, according to the association.) 61Million Americans plan to take a trip in a Recreational Vehicle for the 12 months ending Nov. 2021. RV Industry Association Winter sports category sales were up +165% for L.L. Bean year-to-date in late Nov. 2020, bolstered by increase in snow tubes (+114%) and snowshoes (+340%). RV shipments were up +43% in Nov. 2020 with growth in towables (+46%) outpacing motorhome (+20%) orders. RV Industry Association 7.5 hours daily—The average number of hours children spend in front of a screen versus 4-7 minutes, the average number of minutes children play outside daily.
