from the Publisher W June 2013 issue of MD News Greater Boston. elcoMe to the Seeing the positive reaction to our decision to merge markets in favor of a regional Greater Boston footprint has been gratifying. People generally seem to like the idea, and prospects who hadn't returned my calls for years have suddenly started reaching out to me. All 2013 cover spots are now booked, and we're already scheduling for 2014. It's all very exciting! michael Jones This month's issue has a surgical theme. The cover story Publisher focuses on advanced surgical services at Quincy Medical Greater Boston Center. I have to say, when I arrived at the hospital for the mJONES@mDNEwS.COm (508) 888-1502 photo shoot, I was taken aback by the huge new construction project underway there. And it seems the investments go beyond mere bricks and mortar and extend into the clinical realm. Spine surgeon Brian Kwon, M.D., says he was like a kid on Christmas morning as he unwrapped the brand-new Zeiss microscope for our shoot, and Chief of Surgery Nissage Cadet, M.D., spoke enthusiastically about the higher level of care his team is now able to provide. Our story examines two surgical service lines — vascular and spine — and some of the benefits these new investments offer to area patients. Robotic surgery has been in the news recently, and not necessarily in a good way, as a series of negative reports and a wrongful death suit in Washington have called into question some of the practices surrounding the da Vinci Surgical System. Winchester Hospital has been using the da Vinci platform for many years, and Arlan Fuller, M.D., was there at the very beginning. He asserts that careful selection and rigorous training of surgeons seeking to use the technology makes the system safe and effective, in spite of the bad publicity. Our special clinical section poses important questions about women's health. In it, we take a look at the latest research on menopause's effect on cognitive ability, as well as highlight The Good Samaritan Medical Center Special Care Nursery. Shah Hossain, M.D., is Chief of Neonatology at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton as well as Assistant in Medicine at the Division of Newborn Medicine at Boston Children's Hospital.
