Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. This month, we visit Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute, where we look at advances in cardiovascular care. Currently, the Heart and Vascular Institute is engaged in clinical trials to improve outcomes in heart failure patients, and we delve into two of those studies. We also examine their research concerning the effects of COVID-19 on the heart. Our clinical section on cardiology looks at genetic testing for certain cardiovascular diseases. We also examine new research into the efficacy of stent placement and other interventions in people with stable ischemic heart disease. A multi-year study showed medication and lifestyle changes may be as effective as more invasive procedures for some patient groups. Our national feature takes a look at the anticipated effects of COVID-19 on 2021's medical cost trend. Patient reluctance to seek in-person care, the continued growth of telehealth and expanded coverage of mental health may also affect this year's trends in medical costs.
