2020 and January 2021 confirm NordShieldBrilliant's long-lasting efficacy for up to five weeks. Disinfectants have used alco- hol as the active substance to eliminate microbes and germs. However, the effect of alcohol is short-lived; after it has evapo- rated, typically in a matter of seconds, the treated surface or skin is exposed to contamina- tion again. NordShield Brilliant's long-lasting efficacy is based on a unique layer that does not evaporate but forms a physical, armor-like barrier on the treated surface. l Toray Fleece Features Reduced Microfiber Shedding Toray's technical fleece prod- uct, Karuishi, is known to be comfortable, well priced and work well in a variety of applica- tions. However, recent lab test results now show that the textile has another significant benefit: Karuishi sheds dramatically less plastic microfiber in comparison to other fleece products. Toray's testing labs repeatedly washed samples of Karuishi, as well as competitive fleece, including the outdoor industry's leading stretch fleece. The lint shed by each fabric was col- lected and compared. Karuishi fleece showed far less micro- plastic shedding, especially after repeated washings. For example, after one wash cycle Karuishi shed 3.8 mg lint compared to 9.1 mg lint of a leading stretch fleece brand. Further, after three to five wash cycles Karuishi fleece shed just 1.6 mg lint whereas the lead- ing stretch fleece brand came in at 12.3 mg. To create Karuishi, Toray developed a unique knitting construction that creates a high- volume, two-layer structure, resulting in a higher loft without increasing weight This knitting method allows Toray to use variations of yarns on the face and back, creating fabrics with different performance charac- teristics without using glues or laminates. l textileinsight.com March/April 2021 ~ Textile Insight • 15 Karuishi is a lightweight, high-tech thermal fleece made by Toray.
