Greetings, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. Our surgery issue takes us again to Penn State Health, where Eric Pauli, MD, and his colleagues at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center have devised a leading-edge procedure to repair parastomal hernias and help prevent recurrence. The technique has already improved the quality of life of so many patients. We also discuss two endobronchial valve systems being deployed for patients with severe emphysema. Both systems can be placed using minimally invasive bronchoscopy. In addition, we examine an innovative stem cell treatment being used to help close perianal fistulas that develop as a result of Crohn's disease. I am so excited about the surgical innovations happening right here to make patients' lives a little — or a lot — easier. Our special clinical section focuses on men's health. We explore the extent to which genetic signatures may predict which prostate cancers will spread. A separate article examines a new use for the high blood pressure drug prazosin, which can help ameliorate the more severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
