Greetings, physicians and other healthcare leaders. Welcome to the latest edition of MD News Mid-Penn. In the cover feature of this issue, we explore how diagnostics and treatments for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis have evolved in recent years, giving way to improved outcomes and quality of life for so many women who live with these conditions. While still tricky to treat, ongoing studies conducted at Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine — global leaders in PCOS research — are giving clinicians the evidence-based guidelines and tools necessary to make sound clinical decisions that lead to increasingly more positive outcomes. Penn State Health is also involved in ongoing research for endometriosis, with more fellowship-trained complex OB-GYN surgeons than any other hospital in the area. Patients here also have greater access to clinical trials and empowering opportunities to be more closely involved in their own care. At WellSpan Interventional Pain Specialists, we take a look at the unique, multidisciplinary approach that clinicians there are taking to address chronic pain by closely examining and treating all aspects of a patient's condition. With a targeted analysis and personalized treatment, patients with chronic pain are able to achieve increased well-being and a much better quality of life. Another feature focuses on the plight of childhood obesity and the pros and cons of adolescent bariatric surgery. As the number of obese children continues to rise, surgery has become an option that many are exploring. For teens with morbid obesity, weight-loss surgery is thought to be a safe and effective procedure that may also prevent future health problems such as heart disease and stroke. Still, there's plenty to consider before making a decision. I hope you enjoy reading these and other articles included in the issue — and are also enjoying the new spring season!
