Greetings, and welcome to MD News April. Our cover feature this month takes us to the Pain Institute of Long Island, where the physicians have a full arma- mentarium of therapeutics to help patients manage pain. Their multimodal approach offers patients many avenues to relief, typically without resorting to opioid medications. The Pain Institute is opening two new facilities this summer to enable more convenient access to patients across Long Island. Next, we visit the Stony Brook Multiple Sclerosis Comprehensive Care Center. Patricia K. Coyle, MD, FAAN, FANA, who leads the Center, has brought together advanced diagnostics and a wide range of treatments to help patients living with multiple sclerosis. Our special clinical section on bariatrics takes a look at research that dispels the long-held view that obesity protects against fracture. Also on the topic of bariatric surgery, COVID-19 is still among us, and physicians might do well to include coronavirus-prevention advice in their postsurgical care instructions. The legal experts at Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP discuss these important considerations in detail. An interesting clinical discussion looks at the associa- tion between social media use and depression in young people, while another discussion explores the timing of when people receive knee replacements. Surgery timing can affect the outcomes of the procedure, so it can be detrimental when people put off the surgery or receive it prematurely. For our financial checkup, Dave Rao presents us with an insightful overview of the six essential pillars of a solid financial house. We round out our issue with other practical advice, as well as news about people and places in our local medical community.
