Greetings, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. This month, we look at the options available for treating cancer in the central part of our commonwealth. Patients have more innovative treatments available to them than ever before, thanks in large part to the research being performed at Penn State Cancer Institute (PSCI). Clinical trials available at PSCI now number between 75 and 80, with a goal of surpassing 250 trials. When it comes to lung cancer, a low-dose CT screening test is now available to people ages 50–80 with a history of heavy smoking. Read about how the oncologists at PSCI can offer effective, even curative, treatments to patients whose lung cancer is found early enough. Targeted liver therapies are becoming more precise than ever before. We talk with the radiation oncologists at Penn State Health St. Joseph Cancer Center about the treatments available to destroy cancer while sparing healthy liver tissue. Our clinical section on neurology explores new tests that may identify Parkinson's disease in its preclinical stages, allowing researchers to develop early interventions to decelerate disease process.
