Local News During Pride Month, Stony Brook Medicine administered the first LGBTQ+ community health needs assessment survey on Long Island. The LGBTQ+ Community Health Needs Assessment Survey is a landmark study seeking vital data that will shape the future of LGBTQ+ health care in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. It represents the collaborative efforts of Stony Brook Medicine, in partnership with more than 20 Long Island-based organizations and community leaders who, combined, reach all sectors of the LGBTQ+ community through advocacy programming and services. The need for the LGBTQ+ Health Needs Assessment Survey became clear as Stony Brook Medicine began planning with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for the medical expansion and relocation of the Edie Windsor Healthcare Center, formerly known as the David E. Rogers, M.D. Center. The mission for the Edie Windsor Healthcare Center is to provide compassionate, world-class quality healthcare to the LGBTQ+ community in a culturally sensitive and safe environment. It will reopen this month as Long Island's first comprehensive LGBTQ+ Health Center. The survey gives a voice to all sectors of Long Island's LGBTQ+ community about their healthcare experiences and challenges and helps shape the future of LGBTQ+ services on Long Island. Catholic Health's St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center has a new weapon in its fight against lung cancer with the addition of the Monarch robotic platform. The Monarch platform uses a controller-like interface that allows physicians to insert an endoscope (a thin, flexible robotic tube with a camera tip) deep into the lung with improved reach, vision and control. Combining traditional endoscopic views of the lung with computer- assisted navigation, the new technology provides continuous remote vision of the patient's own lung anatomy, based on 3D models. Catholic Health hospitals — St. Francis Hospital & Heart Center, St. Charles and St. Catherine of Siena — each have earned an "A" rating in the spring 2021 Hospital Safety Scores from The Leapfrog Group. An "A" is the highest rating awarded by Leapfrog. St. Francis earned this distinction for the 17th time out of 19 ratings and has been recognized by The Leapfrog Group as a Top General Hospital, nationally. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive honors American hospitals can receive. St. Charles earned its 10th "A" rating. After organizing a massive COVID-19 relief effort to India, Northwell Health's Center for Global Health (CGH) is partnering with leaders in Ecuador to manage vaccinations as the country grapples with a spike in coronavirus cases. At the request of Ecuador's Minster of Health, and for the first time since the start of the pandemic, the Northwell Health CGH team traveled outside of the U.S. on June 13 to help get shots in arms and relieve overburdened healthcare workers in the South American country who have been working around the clock in the race to vaccinate their population. As the CGH team puts the finishing touches on its Ecuador mission the team is already mapping out its next mission to Guyana. Established in 2019, CGH partners with Northwell department leadership to develop new programs in its core sites — Ecuador, Guyana and India — and supports existing programs in their affiliate sites in the Dominican Republic, Kenya and Uganda. Providers engage in global health activities to help positively impact the health of communities abroad while equipping our providers with skills that inform practice and support patient-centered care globally and locally. Mather's nurse residency program, which became the first to be accredited in New York state in 2018, helps new nurses develop more skills, competency and confidence through a year-long curriculum. Mather's program is one of only 201 ANCC accredited nurse residency programs worldwide. The nurse residency program provides nursing education, evidence-based practice and peer support. Nursing research studies have shown that nurse residency programs increase the retention and satisfaction of new graduate nurses. Lower turnover rates of graduate nurses equate to better patient care. The program aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice, supporting the new graduate nurses in patient care. New Graduate Nurse Transition to Practice at Mather Hospital is recognized by the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program as an Industry Recognized Apprenticeship Program.
