Hip Replacement? NO PROBLEM Welcome to the new era of hip replacement surgery. No longer does an operation require a fourmonth recovery time. "I've had patients up walking the day of surgery," says Frank Lombardo, MD, Orthopedic Associates of Dutchess County and orthopedic surgeon at Vassar Brothers Medical Center's Orthopedic Center of Excellence. "Some patients can walk without a walker in a week and get back to work in a month." Both the standard, posterior hip replacement procedure and the anterior procedure are performed in a minimally invasive manner at VBMC, using small incisions and limiting muscle damage. That means less pain and a quicker return to mobility. The anterior hip replacement procedure offers an especially fast recovery because it affects less muscle tissue and doesn't detach muscles from bone. Additionally, VBMC offers the latest in pain management and physical rehabilitation to aid the healing process. "Patients should feel comfortable having their hip replacement surgery at Vassar Brothers," says Dr. Lombardo, who has had unique training in the anterior procedure and total joint replacement. "They don't need to go to a specialty hospital in the city. We offer the most advanced care here in the Mid-Hudson Valley." Ask a Doctor My Health Quest thanks reader Betty Tabor for her question about targeting extra belly fat. Is it possible to spot reduce in one area of the body? Sharagim S. Kemp, DO, Family Medicine Physician at Health Quest Medical Practice, Rhinebeck, shares her perspective: "Increased abdominal fat predisposes individuals to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure. So losing weight— particularly belly fat—can have a positive impact on health. While spot training—toning one area of the body—is possible, the only way to lose the fat covering abdominal muscles is to increase cardiovascular activity, which burns fat all over your body. Just walking 15 to 30 minutes daily is a good start. Add exercises, such as yoga and Pilates, to work core muscles for best results." No muscles are cut so the patient has no post operative precautions. Most patients are home in three days and return to the office with a cane. In over 50 hip replacements in the last year, I have found that almost every patient is a candidate for this remarkable surgical procedure." —Joel Buchalter, MD, FAAOS, FACS, Orthopedic Surgeon and Co-Director of the Orthopaedic Institute at Putnam Hospital Center myHQ247 PATIENT PORTAL With myHQ247, Health Quest gives you secure online access to your personal clinical information.
