TEXTILE TALK | EMILY WALZER veryone has a role to play in today's collective effort to keep our planet healthy. That goes for the large cast of characters that make up our industry, along with a myriad of supporting members of our textile community on the world stage. The need to unite around sustainability is growing stronger, and more urgent, as climate reports and extreme weather forecasts become dire. The term "Go Bag" used to mean having travel gear at the ready for a quick getaway to attend a trade fair or an out-of-town business meeting. Now "Go Bags" are billed as a carrier to hold necessary documentation, cash, and safety items for evacuation purposes. If that isn't a call to action for changing our ecological outlook, I don't know what is. Or as Martin Flora of Green Theme Technologies said to me the other day, "We're at a critical juncture. We've gotta stop messing around." This issue of Textile Insight is jam-packed with examples of how sustainability has taken root in the business of textiles and given shape to positive, responsible developments across the entire supply chain. I guarantee you'll be uplifted by the multitude of ways industry is stewarding a greener, cleaner marketplace, committed to achieving circularity, and energetically rallying around bio-based material research and carbon neutral manufacturing platforms. Textiles can't do it alone. I've been keeping my eye out for signs of sustainability in all walks of life. And I've found, to my delight, that earth-friendly endeavors are flourishing — in cafes, second hand boutiques, UPS delivery, and believe it or not, a rest stop along Interstate 95. Is there more to be done? Absolutely. Are hard days ahead? Yes. Will the journey be worth it? No doubt.
