No matter how you describe it, sustainability defines this era of textile development. And there are a plethora of planet-positive products on display at Functional Fabric Fair 2021. But what distinguishes our industry from others, is the belief that sustainability alone is not the answer: Innovation is found in the ability to create sustainable goods that don't compromise performance. It's this approach to material development and supply chain practices that makes the products exhibited at this year's show in Portland truly standout. ere is an abundance of newness in the aisles of the Portland Convention Center. Everything from new fiber and fabric, to new performance properties and new technologies, to new manufacturing processes and even new categories of application is being showcased from upwards of 70 quality exhibitors. e mega-trend influencing seasons ahead is how suppliers are continuing to elevate sustainable properties in tandem with achieving higher levels of robust functionality and durability. For Spring/Summer 2023, for example, areas to watch include: exciting new membrane technologies, next-gen recycled and renewable components; lower impact production methods; and enhanced eco aesthetics that feature a range of high- performance attributes, from thermo-regulating properties to antimicrobial protection. Here's a snapshot of the trendsetting sustainable developments previewing in Portland: Schoeller's new biocosmo line features all-weather three- layer fabrication, produced under fair conditions, with new highly-breathable aerobrane weather protection and ecological elements. Hyosung's 100 percent recycled creora regan spandex has a significantly lower eco footprint than conventional spandex. e product, made from reclaimed waste, allows brands to produce garments made from fully recycled materials. eVent fabric's BIO is a lightweight, yet durable, waterproof membrane derived from sustainably- sourced, renewable castor beans, that is recyclable at products' end of life. ermore's thermal insulation, EcoDown Fibers Genius, features a new construction technology that boosts durable performance and serves as a hybrid solution between free fibers and rolled insulation. Consumers emerging from the pandemic have a new perspective on how they want to dress, and as a result a modern active lifestyle wardrobe is taking shape. Whether for indoor remote work or outdoor adventures, sustainably-made, socially-conscious textiles that blend comfort and versatility with appealing aesthetics are top of mind with brands, retailers and individuals alike. In other words, responsible performance is in, disposable fashion is out. n D E S T I N AT I O N P O RT L A N D / I N D U S T RY O U T L O O K B Y E M I LY W A L Z E R 4 • Textile Insight Functional Fabric Fair Special Edition ~ November 2021 textileinsight.com
