This month, our clinical feature on gastroenterolog y reports on advances in treatment for GERD. Affecting about a third of people in the U.S., GERD is notoriously difficult to treat successfully. We examine interventions from diet and lifestyle changes to endoscopic procedures as possible avenues to improve the quality of life for those with GERD. A separate article reports on research by University of Chicago scientists who argue that the microbiome inf luences the body's circadian rhythms. In another article, we examine a treatment to reduce complications of fistula in adult-onset Crohn's disease. While on the subject of gastroenterology, the legal experts at Martin Clearwater & Bell LLP give advice on informed consent in colonoscopy procedures. Turning to men's health, we examine promising therapies for metastasized, castration-resistant prostate cancer. And in women's health, we report on a study showing that many women experience improved sexual function after pelvic organ prolapse surgery. In cardiology, we examine new research into the efficacy of stent placement and other interventions in people with stable ischemic heart disease. A multi-year study showed medication and lifestyle changes may be as effective as more invasive procedures for some patient groups. Looking at the human side of medicine, we explore the benefits of patient navigation. We also share year-end financial advice from Dave Rao. Finally, we're excited to inform you about provider and facility news throughout the region.
