Good News for Cardiovascular Care IMAGE COURTESY OF CIRCULITE PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT SYNERGY Circulatory Support System A micro support blood pump developed by CircuLite Inc., the SYNERGY Circulatory Support System is designed to improve blood circulation and reverse symptoms, such as fatigue and shortness of breath, for ambulatory patients with chronic congestive heart failure. This device broadens the options of patients with severe symptoms that persist in the face of other treatments, such as ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, defibrillators or pacemakers. Intended to improve quality of life, the SYNERGY system alleviates the heart's workload by pumping more than 4 liters of blood per minute. SYNERGY requires a less invasive procedure than cardiopulmonary bypass and is placed in a shallow pocket through a miniature thoracotomy, allowing for a quicker recovery. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted CircuLite conditional approval for use of the device in clinical trials to assess its long-term effectiveness to reverse symptoms in ambulatory chronic heart failure patients.
