++++++++++++++++++++++ +++ + +++ Í CAREER TRACKS+ ++++++++++++++++++++++ INNOVATIVE WAYS to Retain Physicians PRACTICES CAN ATTRACT AND KEEP PHYSICIAN EMPLOYEES BY GETTING CREATIVE. Convert maternity leave to inclusive family leave. Physicians caring for aging parents or other family members will appreciate the work/life assist, while young parents will be attracted to an employer who supports new families. Hold out opportunities for personal as well as professional growth. Consider offering a sabbatical year for personal growth through travel or nonmedical studies (arts, humanities). One hospital attracts physicians with annual paid leave to perform overseas mission work. These offerings may appeal to physicians who want to holistically connect medicine with their personal values. Offer technology. Employers can offer take-home mobile devices and cover the cost of purchasing electronic health record (EHR) systems. For savvy, young physicians, a streamlined, easy-to-use, tablet-accessible EHR may tip the balance, especially when the competition is using a time-consuming clunker. Provide a clear track to promotion. Physicians appreciate understanding where they can be in five or 10 years, as well as performance expectations. Provide helping hands. Use locum tenens physicians, hospitalists and advanced practice providers to help physicians maintain a good work/life balance. Use quality incentives. With the accountable care organization (ACO) model spreading quickly, hospitals and health systems may offer extra bonuses for demonstrated quality care. While Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services regulations do not mandate how ACO shared savings are to be distributed, physicians may appreciate a tangible connection between good work and costs saved.
