For this issue, we focus on oncology. Researchers at Penn State Health are using chimeric antigen-receptor (CAR) T cells to extend survival for patients with a variety of treatment-resistant cancers. We speak with an oncologist to explore the treatment in depth. Also at Penn State Health, patients with head and neck cancers are benefiting from Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci SP system, which allows physicians to treat a wide range of cancers with pinpoint accuracy. The new system was designed to operate in the narrow corridors of the throat, making it ideal for such surgeries. Our clinical section on oncology reports on the conver- sation surrounding de-escalation in breast cancer surgery. While research shows that aggressive treatment may not increase survival rates for some patients, physicians and patients have varying thresholds of risk tolerance. A related article explores the relationship between a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis and cancer risk. People with diabetes have an elevated risk of certain cancers, and the risk seems to peak in tandem with insulin levels. In our national feature, we explore the potential damage caused by ransomware, a type of malware that encrypts data until users pay a ransom. Ransomware can cause serious disruptions in healthcare delivery. We provide advice from the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency about defensive preparation for ransomware attacks. I hope you are having a wonderful autumn. I appreciate everything you do for our region! Warm regards, Susan Ecenbarger
