On social media, for instance, #saynotogre- enwashing has proved a successful media campaign launched by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Greenwashing isn't new: Environmentalist Jay Westerveld is said to have coined the term in 1986 in an article regarding hotels asking guests to reuse towels to conserve energy. But greenwashing's trajectory is moving at a fast clip. A recent study by the European Commission, along with other authorities, revealed that in 42 percent of cases, green claims were exaggerated, false or deceptive. Textile execs agree that these days consumers want traceability and reliability from brands, retailers and industry. "People want to know what's in the cake," said e Lycra Company exec Ebru Ozaydin. n COLOR US MAGENTA Global color forecast specialist Pantone has proclaimed Viva Magenta as the color of the year for 2023. It is described by Pantone as a vibrant relative of the red family, a nuanced crimson tone, and signifying ex- perimentation and self-expression without restraint in "an electrifying, boundary-less shade." As representative of the mood of our contem- porary age, Pantone views Viva Magenta as an "unconventional shade for an unconventional time." How does #magentaverse stack up against the textile community's forecast for the year ahead? In interviews with a round-up of textile suppliers many report feeling cautiously upbeat about business in 2023, but far from Viva level exuberance, with execs seeing "lights in the tunnel," and suggesting "pragmatic optimism" as the current mood of the marketplace heading into 2023. n Chart source: Sustainable Brands PANTONE ® 18-1750 TCX Viva Magenta
