Greetings, and welcome to MD News Central Pennsylvania. In this issue of MD News, we explore ways in which advances in orthopedic surgery processes and technologies benefit patients. Our cover feature explores the CORI Surgical System and how it enables extremely precise total knee arthroplasty procedures. In another feature, we look at how Penn State Health Bone and Joint Institute has refined patient care before and after outpatient hip and knee surgeries, allowing patients to go home faster. We also dive into an exciting development in orthopedic surgery — the use of mixed reality for total shoulder arthroplasty and its transforma- tive potential for other orthopedic procedures. Experts at Penn State Health walk us through the nuances of both these innovations. Our clinical section on degenerative disease looks at lifestyle approaches to reduce cog nitive decline and improve mental function in older adults. Recent research finds that tai chi, a practice combining physical activity, meditation and task-switching, yields greater improvements than physical activity alone in the areas of short-term memory, executive function, attention, concentration and working memory. A separate article looks at efforts to reduce patients' chances of developing rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers found behaviors associated with a high Nurses' Health Study Healthy Lifestyle Index Score predicted a lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. In our national feature, we explore the potential damage caused by ransomware, a type of malware that encrypts data until users pay a ransom. Ransomware can cause seri- ous disruptions in healthcare delivery. We provide advice from the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency about defensive preparation for ransomware attacks.
