that 10% of all runners will have plantar fasciitis at some point in their lives. What is plantar fasciitis? The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, attaching at the bottom of the heel bone and extending to the forefoot. The plantar fascia can become overstretched from standing for long periods of time or walking and running long distances. This can cause inflammation and significant pain. Plantar fasciitis is usually felt on the inner part of the heel and is most severe first thing in the morning upon your first steps. Orthotics can help with plantar fasciitis, but orthotics can only be worn when wearing shoes. Orthotic sandals have also shown to help with this condition. Both options provide relief by supporting and cradling the foot, reducing overpronation and stress to the plantar fascia. But, just how much do they help? A randomized control trial was conducted through the University of Liverpool to investigate the treatment efficacy of orthotics alone as well as the combination of orthotics and orthotic sandals. 104 participants with plantar fasciitis were recruited into a six-month study. One group wore Aetrex Compete Orthotics with their running shoes and the Aetrex Maui Orthotic flips when they weren't wearing shoes. The other group wore Aetrex Compete Orthotics only. Participants rated their pain and foot function at different points during the six months. The results were striking! Participants who used both the orthotics and the orthotic flips reduced their pain by a whopping 52.6%! Participants who used the orthotics alone reduced their pain by an impressive 41.9%! And, foot function improved by over 37%. Both groups showed significant improvement and obtained symptom relief. However, the group that used both the orthotics and the flips had greater benefit than the group that used just the orthotics. Aetrex Compete Orthotics are designed specifically for comfort, support and weight redistribution in athletic, walking and comfort footwear. These tri-density orthotics feature a Copper Guard top cover and a layer of Pro-Shox® for superior cushioning and shock absorption. Copper Guard's high-tech polyester fibers wick moisture away from the foot and provide a cool, friction free surface to prevent blisters and other foot problems. Aetrex Maui Orthotic Flips with arch support are made from UltraSky™ injected EVA to provide extreme cushioning, shock absorption and durability. The contoured rearfoot cradles your heel and relieves pressure. The support pod helps to relieve forefoot pressure. Visit aetrex.com to learn more.
