A couple of months ago I got the opportunity to travel to Tulum, Mexico on a yoga retreat. e trip provided a chance to go to the beach with my girlfriends and relax. In taking a short pause, I came away clear-headed – without all of those outside stressors that get in the way on the daily. Stopping to take a breath is important this time of year. If the textile industry were to set a resolution, it would probably be to work smarter, plan better for the future and share more. As explored in this issue's cover story, we're in a time of transition with a lot hanging in the balance. Newness, collaboration and caring for the planet are what will propel us forward. e goal is to keep innovation at the forefront, as Kathlyn Swantko explores while digging into a sustainable initiative involving the military. Important progress in "self- healing combat boots" involves finding ways for tears in boots to mend themselves, anywhere a soldier may be stationed. Meanwhile, Emily Walzer's time at the Future Fabrics Expo in NYC allowed her to poke around into the world of next gen materials – something we're talking a lot about – and ask a plethora of questions about viability and growth. In our current tepid climate, I can't help but think how much traditional roles in the textile industry have changed. We're all asking a lot of questions. Our jobs have ballooned way beyond that paragraph of a job description to needing to know – and rely upon – the entire supply chain. It can definitely be an overwhelming experience. Reminder: take a breath. For those looking to wade in slowly or learn a bit more, the organizers at Performance Days have coordinated this edition's Day 0 (March 4 in Munich) to "involve the supply chain more actively." Even if you don't have formal training in reducing environmental impacts, we are all key players in this mission, making choices in materials that will affect all of us for a very long time. n TAKE A BREATH Newness, collaboration and caring for the planet are what will propel us forward.
