FIXES FOR WINTER SKIN As winter progresses, cold air and wind outside and arid indoor heat remove skin's natural moisture, causing dryness, cracking, and flaking. Take preventive measures to help protect your skin. Use harsh cleansers sparingly. Soaping up strips moisture from skin. Switching to an alcohol-free antibacterial sanitizer or soap with moisturizing properties allows skin to maintain more natural water content. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Lotions and creams that work well during milder weather may not be enough to keep skin smooth this time of year. Products that contain skin-safe oils should be used regularly. They keep water on skin longer, allowing it to absorb over time. Shield skin from further damage. Even if the sun seems less intense on a short winter day, it can still cause skin damage and sunburns. Coat exposed skin in a sunscreen designed to protect it from both types of the sun's damaging rays, called ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Rough skin? Talk with your primary care physician to see if a CHRISTUS Santa Rosa physician can help. To find a physician, call 877.250.DOCS (3627). Bundle up. Jackets, boots, gloves, and hats help keep the body warm and protect skin from exposure to elements that dry it out. Opt for natural humidity. Humidifiers combat the drying effects of indoor heaters. Achieve the same results naturally by keeping houseplants. Same-Day Care: Choosing the Right Solution Emergencies don't wait for office hours.
