New Adult ENT Physicians In addition to the new pediatric physicians, four new adult otolaryngologists have been recruited. Dr. Kenneth Rodriguez joined the UH ENT Institute in July. Dr. Rodriguez was recruited to be the new Chief of Rhinology, Allergy & Anterior Skull Base Surgery. He completed residency training in Otolar yngolog y at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and fellowship training in Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base Surgery at University of North Carolina. He joins Dr. Tony Reisman, Chief of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center; Dr. Chad Zender, an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon; and Dr. Diana Ponsky, an otolaryngologist and otolaryngology-facial plastic surgeon. All share an interest and expertise in the management of sinus disease. "A ll four share an interest in Rhinology," says Dr. Megerian. "As a team, they will expand their ability to work with Neurosurgery in anterior skull base disorders." They will also expand the ENT Institute's Sinus Center, with new locations in Chagrin Highlands and Westlake. "What this will provide is a community-based center where people can come to obtain comprehensive evaluations and potentially in-office procedures, such as balloon sinuplasty," explains Dr. Rodriguez. Dr. Rodriguez's specialty training includes complex and revision sinus surgery as well as nasal airway surgery. He has also had formal training in both benign and malignant cranial base surgery and encephalocele and CSF leak repair. "Just after my fellowship, I completed further training in allergic disease through the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy," he says. "I'll pursue the advanced allergy course and formal fellowship in that organization in the time to come." Joining the team next summer is Dr. Ma rk Weidenbecher a nd Dr. Nicole Fowler. Dr. Weidenbecher will become part of the ENT Institute's Laryngolog y Division, under the leadership of Dr. Nicole Maronian, after he completes his fellowship at Harvard-Massachusetts General Hospital in July 2014. His job will be to help expand the UH Laryngology and Voice Disorders Center, which opened at UH Case Medical Center in 2011, to Chagrin Highlands. Dr. Fowler will join the Head and Neck Surgery Division, led by Dr. Pierre Lavertu, in August 2014. Dr. Fowler did her residency training at Cleveland Clinic and is currently completing fellowship training in Head and Neck Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle. "Our two microvascular head and neck surgeons — Dr. Rod Rezaee and Dr. Zender — are so busy; they're doing over 175 microvascular free-flap surgeries a year. So we recruited Dr. Fowler to join their team," says Dr. Megerian. "She'll also be responsible for building a head and neck tumor data base, and tissue bank, so we can develop a tumor registry and study the tumors both going forward and backwards for genetic markers that led to the disease. She has an expertise in that area." Rounding out the group will be Dr. Evan Greenbaum, who will serve starting in July 2014, as the first Head and Neck Microvascular Surgery Fellow. Dr Greenbaum will be joining the department for a one year fellowship after graduating from the Otolaryngology training program at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Megerian admits he is very proud of his six new recruits. "They are all from very prestigious programs and are very, very well trained," he says. "And they all moved here from out-of-state. I think that's absolutely a wonderful testimony to our ENT Institute ... and to the hospital, the university and the city of Cleveland, as well."
