from the Publisher Greater Boston Publisher: Michael Jones W Managing Editor: Maggie Neff latest issue of MD News Greater Boston. elcoMe to the The discipline of palliative care is becoming more important as the population ages, the prevalence of Greater Boston chronic diseases increases and five-year cancer survival MJONES@MDNEwS.COM rate improves. 508-888-1502 In recent years, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, in partnership with HopeHealth, has developed a palliative care team that has become a model for the region. In this month's cover story, we talk to Marcy Carty, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Good Samaritan Medical Center, and Kristin Clarkin, MD, Hope Hospice's Medical Director, about the changing role of palliative care in the region. It's been more than 10 years since we published our first story about cardiac care at Southcoast Health System. Since that time, Southcoast has continued to demonstrate its commitment to locally offering a wide array of cardiovascular services, including open heart procedures, cardiac catheterizations, coronary angioplasty and cardiac implantable devices. Now, it is stepping up its capabilities even more by starting a new Structural Heart Program. In our interview with Adam Saltzman, MD, Medical Director of the Structural Heart Program, we take a look at what this means for area patients. Another huge challenge facing patients in the Boston area is diabetes. Morton Hospital in Taunton recently bolstered the level of services it can provide for patients with diabetes by adding three diabetes specialists to the hospital's Steward Medical Group Specialty Care office. We talk to Dan Tang, MD, PhD; Hagop Kojanian, MD; and diabetes educator Margaret Pochay, RD, CDE, about the expansion of diabetes care services at Morton Hospital. Before I go, I should mention that spots are starting to fill up in our fall special edition, the CEOs of Health Care. The edition will focus on the view of the industry from the executive suite and represents an ideal (and unique) opportunity for top executives to share their views of where the industry is headed and shape the role their organizations are likely to play in that evolving landscape. The special edition offers a wonderful opportunity for your CEO to lead the conversation in a way that reflects most positively on your organization. The issue deadlines Oct. 31, so let's chat sooner rather than later if your CEO would like to be featured. As always, thanks to everyone who has helped us put these stories together. We are continuing to firm up our editorial calendar for 2014, so if you have a story you would like us to feature, do let us know.
