Q &A Gregory B. Snyder, md, dABR PRESidENT, miNNESOTA bOARd Of mEdiCAl PRACTiCE Q What is your role as President of the minnesota board of medical Practice? A: The state of Minnesota has 21,296 licensed physicians — 16,507 MDs and 4,789 DOs. The Minnesota Board of Medical Practice was created under state law to ensure the safety of the public when interacting with physicians. This is accomplished in two ways: licensing and discipline. For licensing, we verify that those applying are appropriately qualified and verify their credentials. We ensure at least minimal continuing professional development occurs by requiring and reviewing continuing medical education hours for relicensing physicians. If a complaint is submitted against a doctor, it is our role to investigate the merits, confirm the facts and then offer steps to re-educate the physician, require practice modifications that allow the physician to be successful in the future, or — on more egregious issues — restrict or revoke the license. Our only mandate is to protect the public. This is both the state law and the guiding principle under which we operate. There are 16 members on the board — 11 physicians and five public members.
