from the Publisher Richard Keene PUBLISHER Central New York RKEENE@MDNEWS.COM 315-446-8331 T much for reading the January/February issue of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. H A N K YO U V E RY Our cover story features the robotic surgery program at Crouse Hospital. In 2008, Crouse Hospital added the da Vinci robot-assisted surgical platform to its surgical portfolio and in 2013 inaugurated its multidisciplinary Institute for Robotic Surgery. The hospital added a second da Vinci Surgical System earlier in 2013 to open the possibility of minimally invasive robotic surgery to patients who may have previously needed traditional open surgery. The da Vinci is a game changer. Also in this issue, our interior feature is about the Prostate Cancer Program at Upstate Medical University. The program derives its strategy for successful outcomes from the most up-to-date training and technology available. At Upstate, a close partnership with the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute helps make this possible. The Upstate approach tackles the complex disease process from diagnosis to active treatment for those who are at high risk, to avoiding unnecessary treatment for some who are not. In his column, Onondaga County Medical Society Executive Vice President Jerry Hoffman discusses the idea, floated by New York state government, to tie physicians' licensure to their participation in a statewide electronic information network, SHIN-NY. Hoffman writes that after much discussion, and the opposition of MSSNY and several other organizations, the state has backed off this idea, and it has been placed on the back burner for at least two years. This is just another example of the effectiveness of MSSNY as an advocate and champion of physicians in the state. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience, one with real local relevance. In each issue, we highlight distinguished and accomplished physicians and practice groups. We also provide updates on the latest medical studies, pointers for managing your practice and a unique look at what is happening in the local medical community. We love to receive nominations for our cover stories, current news within your organization and feedback on articles. I would also like to suggest that you visit www.mdnews.com to discover a wonderful resource for healthcare marketing. We are here to serve the physician and healthcare community.
