focus on health ::: community::: Stepping Into a Glen Cove Hospital is undergoing an essential transformation to better serve the community. At a time when the delivery of healthcare is undergoing profound change, Glen Cove Hospital is shifting to a new facility model, one which provides and serves as the catalyst for a broader array of community-based services. GLEN COVE HOSPITAL has served Glen Cove and the surrounding communities for more than 90 years, and the North Shore-LIJ Health System is eager for the hospital to add to that legacy of caring. To do so requires adapting to the shifting landscape of healthcare. Current local and national trends indicate that medical care is shifting to more specialized outpatient facilities and that healthcare is becoming proactive rather than reactive. Prevention — stopping chronic diseases from developing rather than treating them when they do — is the healthcare industry's new focus. Healthcare systems and physician groups are being challenged to "manage" population health — and assume more active roles in helping their patients embrace healthy lifestyles. The goal of population health management is to keep people as healthy as possible, which minimizes the need for expensive interventions, such as emergency department visits, hospitalizations, imaging tests and procedures. For residents of the Glen Cove area, that means developing programs aimed at preventing people from getting sick in the first place. We want to partner with community members by providing education about the consequences of destructive lifestyles and behaviors, and how lives can be destroyed by chronic diseases caused by overeating, excessive drinking, drug use and lack of physical activity. Focusing on the Most Important Services The "New" Glen Cove Hospital will be anchored by a full-service Emergency Department with expanded capabilities, including a new unit staffed by a geriatric specialist who will closely monitor the needs of frail seniors. In addition to emergency services and home-based programs, the hospital will offer the following programs. • Ambulatory surgery in numerous clinical areas, including breast, sinus, cataract, urology, vascular, podiatry and general surgeries • A Family Medicine Center that will provide primary care, prenatal care, behavioral health services, pediatrics care, immunizations, sexual health and dental care • An Advanced Imaging Center at 10 Medical Plaza continuing to offer imaging services such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and general X-rays • Occupational therapy and outpatient rehabilitation for orthopaedic, pulmonary and neurological conditions at the Wunsch Center for Rehabilitative Therapies • A Short-Stay Inpatient Unit that will be available to meet the essential needs of patients who require TO FIND A COMMUNITY PHYSICIAN NEAR YOU, CALL 1-888-321-DOCS.
