"O ne of t he big gest adv a nt a ges of the da Vinci system for the right patients is that recover y is so much faster," says Cleveland Clinic OB/GYN Mona Orady, MD, who performs two to three robotic-assisted surgery cases a week. "With a robotic hysterectomy, for instance, patients are back to their norma l lives in t wo to three weeks instead of six to eight week s. A s a woma n, I underst a nd t hat women tend to stay ver y busy taking care of others. Many can't afford to be down for eight weeks. The robotic approach is a huge advantage for them." I n a dd it ion t o f a s t er re c o v er y, patients who undergo a robotic-assisted procedure can also expect significantly less pa in a f ter wa rd. The enha nced visualization and maneuverability of the robotic tools often means that even complex operations can be performed t hrough just a few sma ll incisions (or in some cases, a single incision), reducing blood loss and trauma to the abdominal cavity and the abdominal wall, both of which are associated with greater pain. Other benefits include less scarring, a lower risk of infection, and a ver y short hospital stay. At Fair view, all of these advantages are offered in a more relaxed and very personal environment, according to Dr. Orady. "I think it ca n be a rea l advantage for patients to have their surger y at Fair view and not have the added st ress of nav igat ing a la rge hospital campus." Robotic Gyn Surgery A g raduate of t he Un iversit y of Wester n Ont a r io Schu lich School of Medicine & Dentistr y, Dr. Orady completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Ohio State University Medical Center. She performed her first robotic-assisted procedure in 2008. S i n c e t h e n , a n d a f t e r j o i n i n g Cleveland Clinic as Director of Robotic Surgery Education in 2012, Dr. Orady has performed more than 300 robotic cases. While hysterectomy is the most common robotic-assisted procedure she performs (and one of the most com- mon surgical procedures for women), Dr. Orady a lso utilizes the robotic system to offer minima lly invasive (L-R) Gynecologic oncologist Jason Knight, MD, and OB/GYN Mona Orady, MD, are two of the growing roster of highly trained surgeons offering minimally invasive options to women at Fairview Hospital. 2 0 1 4 M A R C H /A P R I L ■ M D N E W S .
