Robert H. Bell, MD, a surgeon with Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center and Summa Health System, was recently named President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society, which seeks to foster and advance the science and practice of shoulder and elbow care through education and research. Five Akron Children's Hospital anesthe - siologists recently earned board cer- tification in Pediatric Anesthesiology. Drs. Ibrahim Farid, Ross Agnor, Bradley Riemenschneider, Nancy O'Dell and Andrew Meyer are reportedly among the first in the world to voluntarily sit for the examination. Pediatric anesthesiology has never required a board certification, but mandates have been changing. Within the next 3 years, all anesthesiologists who care for children in large pediatric institutions will be required to have board certification. All of Akron Children's anesthesiologists will go through the certification process. The team performed about 15,000 pediat - ric anesthetic procedures in 2013. Summa Health System surgeons Adrian G. Dan, MD, Shayda Mirhaidari, MD, Mark Pozsgay, DO, Andrew Standerwick, MD, and John G. Zografakis, MD, and research associate Ashley Bohon, MA, published "Two-Trocar Cholecystectomy by Strategic Laparoscopy for Improved Cosmesis (SLIC)" in the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (JSLS), October-December 2013 issue. Conclusions reached from the study indicated SLIC cholecystectomy is fea - sible and safe. The two-trocar technique reportedly decreased the cumulative incision length, as well as the number of incisions needed, which improved cos - metic results in patients with a favorable body habitus and surgical history. Scott D. Weiner, MD, Chair of Orthopaedics at Summa Health System and Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center, recently co-authored several clinical journal articles. Highlights from his most recent body of work includes "On Volunteerism and Orthopaedics: AOA Critical Issues" published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and "Primary human chondrocyte extracel - lular matrix formation and phenotype maintenance using RGD-derivatized PEGDM hydrogels possessing a continu- ous Young's modulus gradient" published in Acta Biomaterialia. Scott Wilber, MD, Medical Director of Senior Emergency Care and Director of Emergency Medicine Research at Summa Akron City Hospital, has been granted a sub- award for the NIH funded research study "Improving Syncope Risk Stratification in Older Adults." During the first nine months of study enrollment, over 100 sub - jects have been enrolled at the Hospital. This study will be enrolling for 3.5 years. ■ Local Docs in National News 1 2 | Cleveland/Akron/Canton MD NEWS ■ M D N E W S . CO M ■ M A R C H /A P R I L 2 0 1 4
