C HRONIC ELBOW PAIN — whether it's the result of playing ten- nis or golf, or engaging in repetitive activities at home or work — can be debilitating. So can the treatment, if invasive surgery is required. A new 20-minute procedure, recently introduced at Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio, by orthopaedic surgeon Matthew P. Noyes, MD, offers a viable alternative. The procedure, known as Tenex Health TX, combines conventional ultrasound imaging for visualization with an advanced ultrasonic energy delivery system to remove damaged tendon tissue — the source of elbow pain. It was developed by Bernard Morrey, MD, Emeritus Chairman and professor of Orthopaedics at Mayo Clinic and at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, where Dr. Noyes completed his fellow- ship training in shoulder and elbow arthroscopy and arthroplasty. "I was fortunate to receive my fellow- ship training in the Tenex procedure and elbow surgery from Dr. Morrey," he says. "To date I have performed more than 70 Tenex procedures and have had no complications." Dr. Noyes is one of a few orthopae- dic surgeons between Cleveland and Columbus who currently perform the Tenex procedure. He joined Union Hospital and the East Ohio Orthopaedics practice (formerly Dover Orthopaedics) in September of 2013. In addition to chronic elbow pain, he specializes in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoul- der replacement and fractures of the upper extremity. Traditional vs. Tenex Treatment Elbow pain is often the result of dam- age to the tendon caused by repetitive twisting of the wrist. Initially, rest or inactivity is prescribed to allow the tendon to heal and the pain to subside. If that does not work or is not possible, a cortisone injection or physical therapy might be the next step. The last resort, and the best for long-term results, is arthroscopic or open surgery to remove the diseased tissue and eliminate the source of the pain. SURGERY SPOTLIGHT of Elbow Pain Introduced at Union Hospital Advanced Treatment Orthopaedic surgeon Matthew P. Noyes, MD, recently introduced a new procedure for chronic elbow pain, called Tenex Health TX, at Union Hospital in Dover. The Tenex procedure combines conventional ultrasound imaging for visualization with an advanced ultrasonic energy delivery system to remove damaged tendon tissue. 1 8 | Cleveland/Akron/Canton MD NEWS ■ M D N E W S .
