Conventional dentures are one option; however, dentures are only about 30 percent as efficient at chewing as natural teeth, and many patients must rely on denture adhesive for retention of the den- tures while eating. In addition, bone loss in the jaws continues over the life of the patient once teeth are removed, and the patient will need dentures to be relined or remade every five to seven years. Placement of dental implants in the jaws provides retention of a variety of types of dental prostheses and pre- ser ves bone in the jaws because the stimulation of the bone comes from within the bone marrow similar to the stimulation from tooth roots. Dental implants can be used to retain "snap- on" type dentures that are removable by the patient or fixed implant dentures which are screwed into place and not removable by the patient.
