Dan Senkiw P U B L I SHE R 4 | Mid Hudson MD NEWS MDNEWS.COM (914) 967-6565 T dsenkiw@mdnews.com Hillside Place Rye, NY 10580 ELCOME TO THE June issue of MD News Mid Hudson. Summer has arrived in the Hudson Valley region and as resi- dents hit the bike trails, beaches and the great outdoors in general, an increase in emergency department visits often follows. Although almost every large hospital has an emergency department, Good Samaritan Hospital is improving the aggressive treatment of emergency conditions by embracing rapid technological advances, as well as doubling its size over the next year and a half. Beyond the brick and mortar, emergencies require prompt, seamless action, and a great department looks for opportunities to improve and build on its success. This month, Brian Blaufeux, M.D., FACEP, Medical Director of the Good Samaritan Hospital emergency department, describes how the hospital has comingled technological improvements and process advancements to provide residents with the best possible care. We also examine the relationship between the medical and psychiatric health of children. This article discusses the importance of delving into seemingly unexplainable symptoms in pediatric patients to discover what social or behavioral issues may lie underneath these physical ailments. As William Sonis, M.D., triple board-certifi ed child and adolescent psychiatrist and professor, and Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Drexel University College of Medicine, stresses: “Writing a problem off without investigating further robs children of learning how to manage themselves and their problems.” In our primary national feature, we take a look at a common medical condition that affects more than 34 million Americans: asthma. Although no cure exists for asthma, modern medical research is constantly evolving to provide breakthrough treatment options. In the following pages, you’ll hear from Marc W. Cromie, M.D., board-certifi ed asthma, allergy and immunology specialist, and partner/owner of the Chattanooga Allergy Clinic in Chattanooga, TN, and refresh your knowledge of frequent asthma diagnoses. You’ll also read about some of the challenges associated with immunotherapy and its impact on pediatric asthma patients. Each month, we offer a unique look at what’s happening in the local medical community and look forward to your feedback on the topics covered. Here’s a quick preview of areas being covered in the next several months: + July — Updates in medical technology + August — Neurology: disorders and advances in treatment + September — Dermatology: treatments, technologies and approaches to care + October — Oncology: clinical trial data and advances in care Give us a call to discuss opportunities to feature your expertise and local perspective. It’s a great way to connect with your physician community, as well as hospitals and medical groups.
