The study tested 140 healthy 8- to 9-year-old children whose mothers had been previously followed by researchers from 12 weeks of gestation. At birth, each infant’s size, placental weight and estimated gestational duration was recorded. Researchers followed up with the subjects in childhood, using tympanic membrane thermometry (TMT) to calculate symmetry of cerebral activity. By measuring the laterality of brain function in response to stress — as indicated by TMT — researchers found that children born at a smaller size, relative to placental weight, experienced more activity in the right hemisphere of the brain than in the left, indicating a risk for the development of enhanced stress responsivity and depression later in life. n PHYSICIAN OPENING PDR has the opportunity you have been looking for...
