COVER FEATURE LIPIX’s Results Distribution service, physicians can subscribe to receive test results as soon as the results are available within the LIPIX system. Physicians can also choose to have the results delivered through a secure fax or electronic message, or directly to the EHR. “If a patient is suffering from a coagulation disorder, for example, and is on blood-thinners, the treating physician can receive immediate access to the results of the patient’s blood work as soon as they are available if he or she is using a laboratory that is connected to the LIPIX network,” says Becker. “That physician is then able to reach out to the patient and adjust his or her medication regimen, if needed. Being able to get information to clinicians in the midst of their busy schedules provides the opportunity to alter a course of treatment for a specific patient hours or days earlier.” Results are transmitted through secure communications, and physicians must log in to the system using a two-factor authentication system to ensure patient information remains safe. Making EHR Implementation Easier LIPIX has partnered with the New York eHealth Collaborative and its Regional Extension Center program — a federally funded initiative — to provide physicians with meaningful use consultation services. LIPIX staff works with its members and their credentialed and affiliated physicians to facilitate EHR implementation in ambulatory physician practices. Staff members also work with physicians to ensure they have met the required objectives to qualify for meaningful use. “By leveraging our expertise and using specific tools at our disposal, we are able to help practices redesign their workflow and provide necessary training and support to ensure that practices are in line to meet meaningful use requirements,” says Becker. “At LIPIX, we have enrolled a large number of physicians into our RHIO and additional programs such as e-prescribing, which helps ensure that they will achieve meaningful use,” adds Greaker. “By working with physicians to ensure they achieve all requirements, we help guarantee full receipt of the $44,000 in federal incentive funds per physician.” “I am not only the president and CEO of LIPIX, but also a user of the system. In my functions as an emergency room physician, I use LIPIX during every clinical shift and have found that it offers me a great benefit as I work and communicate with physicians from multiple facilities each day. LIPIX equips me with the feedback necessary to provide and enhance treatment solutions.” — Ben Stein, M.D., President and CEO of LIPIX 8 | Mid Hudson MD NEWS  MDNEWS.COM Medication Management Medication management is a newer service still in develop- ment at LIPIX. Combining the capability of e-prescribing with medication reconciliation functionality, the LIPIX Medication Management application allows physicians to minimize the potential for adverse drug reactions. LIPIX’s Medication Management e-prescribing capabilities enable physicians to search a patient’s medical history and view all medications that he or she is currently taking. Physicians can then enter the prescription they were planning to prescribe, and the system will verify whether that prescription could potentially cause adverse drug reactions. “Using medication management, physicians can confirm that the medications they are prescribing are compatible with both the presenting illness and the other medications the patient takes,” says Dr. Stein. “This service is generating considerable interest within the medical community, and I believe it will be very beneficial for both area physicians and patients.” Event Notification Another new service garner- Dr. Benjamin Stein, President and CEO of LIPIX ing interest is LIPIX’s Event Notification application. This service sends an electronic update to physicians when patients are admitted to the emergency department or are admitted for inpatient care. If the patient uses home care services, Physician using LIPIX to convey information to administrators in order to provide a higher level of care throughout an office or medical institution
