Continued from Page 64 an Emergency Medicine Excellence Award. University Hospitals (UH) recently an- nounced plans to establish a $30 million proton therapy center at UH Seidman Cancer Center. Proton therapy is an advanced type of radiation therapy to precisely target and match treat- ment to the shape of a tumor with incredible accuracy, delivering higher and more conformal radiation doses while sparing healthy tissue. The use of protons is also extremely valuable for the treatment of some cancers in children and young adults, who seem to be more prone to short and long-term complications from radiation. There are only nine proton therapy centers in the nation; the UH site reportedly will be the fi rst confi rmed in Ohio. University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital was ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top 50 children’s hospitals in the nation in 10 out of 10 medical and surgical specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrine disorders, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. The methodology of this year’s rankings included weighing a three-part blend of reputation, outcome and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology and credentialing.
