COVER FEATURE Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Aultman: High-Level Care for High-Risk Patients By Alex Strauss Prabhcharan Gill, MD, medical director of Aultman’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program, is shown here reviewing a 3-D fetal ultrasound image with genetic counselor Erin Rooney, MS. OF THE 2,500 BABIES born at Aultman Hospital each year, the vast majority of deliveries run smoothly. But for the 10-15 percent of high-risk patients who do need special care before conception, during pregnancy or at delivery, the hospital’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program, staffed by three fellowship-trained perinatologists and supported by Stark County’s only level III Birth Center and NICU, can make the difference. Prabhcharan Gill, MD, Michael Krew, MD, and Timothy McDaniel, MD, are the maternal-fetal medicine specialists (perinatologists) at Aultman where a comprehensive continuum of care is available for women with high-risk pregnancies and their babies. Dr. Krew, who developed Aultman’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program as currently structured, has been with the hospital since 1992; Dr. Gill, since 1994. Dr. McDaniel joined them in 2004. 8 | Cleveland-Akron-Canton MD NEWS  MDNEWS.COM  JULY-AUGUST 2011 “The great majority of pregnan- cies are normal,” says Dr. Krew, medical director of Aultman’s Perinatal Services Level III, “but when there are complications with the mom or baby, due to pre-existing medical conditions, genetic disorders, pre-term labor and delivery, etc., moms and their families can rest assured that Aultman has the specialized team and technology right here under one roof to treat them.” In addition to the three pernatolo- gists, the maternal-fetal medicine team PHOTO © JOE SMITHBERGER, SMITHBERGER PHOTOGRAPHY, NORTH CANTON
