University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Opens U NIVERSITY HOSPITALS (UH) Seidman Cancer Center, Northeast Ohio’s first and only freestanding cancer hospital, opened to patients on June 6. The 375,000-square-foot, 150-bed cancer hospital brings a wealth of diagnostic and treatment technologies under one roof to provide the nation’s most advanced cancer care. The 10-story hospital is named for Jane and Lee Seidman in honor of their $42 million gift to UH in November 2010. The $260 million facility, one of 12 freestanding cancer hospitals in the country that are part of a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, triples the square footage that cancer services currently encompass at UH Case Medical Center and brings all facets of cancer care under one roof. The cancer hospital will be home to the latest treatment protocols and the most advanced imaging, thera- peutic and information technologies. Highlights include: + Hybrid PET/MRI machine, one of four in the world and the only one in a cancer hospital, will generate enhanced digital images to pinpoint precise tumor locations. + Operating room has state-of-the-art intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite that enables surgeons to obtain real-time images during procedures to reduce the need for re-operation. + More than 300 clinical trials will be available, offering patients access to the latest treatments first. + Four inpatient floors offer all private rooms with overnight accommodations for families. The UH Seidman Cancer Center has been carefully planned with significant input from patients and their families to create a healing-focused environment. The patient- and family-centered design features overnight accommodations for families, inpatient exercise areas, abundant natural light and a healing garden. Clinical care areas will focus on multidisciplinary cancer care, and the design also incorporates space for clinical trials, diagnostics, outpatient and inpatient treatment, surgery, patient education programs, radiation oncology, infusion therapy and teaching space. “Cancer affects every aspect of a patient’s life and the new Seidman Cancer Center will combine, under one roof, the most advanced cancer treatments with a cache of therapies designed to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of our patients,” said Nathan Levitan, MD, President, UH Seidman Cancer Center. “This state-of-the-art hospital promises to transform cancer care in Northeast Ohio and beyond.” n
