Researchers plan to move forward with their newfound information, hoping to make a difference in the lives of patients with kidney disease and to verify that chronic kidney disease (CKD) predisposes patients to calcification. For many patients struggling with CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD), arterial calcium deposits means a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Physicians may be able to better identify arterial calcification in CKD and ESRD patients who receive routine mammograms. According to a study conducted at Emory University by W. Charles O’Neill, M.D., when 71 women with ESRD underwent a mammogram screening, 63% of them had breast arterial calcification, while 71 women without kidney disease only had 17% breast arterial calcification. n Want a healthier practice?
