"We are here to establish long-term relationships with local physicians. With our multimodal clinic, we are able to do the best thing for their patients — not merely advocate a standardized treatment approach. Our surgeons are eager to extend their world-class academic and clinical experience to patients in the community." — Christopher Voscopoulos, MD, Medical Director of the Pain Management Center; Division Chief of Pain Medicine at Norwood Hospital T H E N E W PA I N m a n a gement team, headed by Christopher Voscopoulos, MD, Medical Director of the Pain Management Center and Division Chief of Pain Medicine at Norwood Hospital, differentiates itself from other pain practices by offering comprehensive pain care. The board-certified providers, trained at such acclaimed programs as Harvard University, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital, aim to make tertiary-level expertise in pain man- agement accessible to patients in Norwood and the surrounding communities. Physicians, nurses, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and counselors work together to establish multifaceted, customized approaches to relieving each patient's pain. The unique practice setting at Norwood Hospital is part of the larger Steward Healthcare System, allowing the pain center to provide an even broader range of comprehensive services, such as easy access to diagnostic radiol- ogy, laboratory diagnostics, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, and physical therapy and rehabilitation, all under one roof. Advanced therapies are offered depend- ing on the etiology and nature of each patient's pain, according to Dr. Voscopoulos. "If a patient presents with an acute illness, we take a functional approach," he says. "We concentrate on getting them to where they should be and optimizing their total function. For people who have a chronic illness underlying their pain, we take a multifactoral approach to re-establishing their quality of life, including multimodal medical management, behavioral and psychological therapies, biofeedback, aqua, physical and occupational therapy, infusion therapy, and, if needed, surgical procedures, such as kyphoplasty, spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal pumps and others. We also specialize in cancer pain, offering a host of unique treatments for this special patient population." DanaMarie E. Aminian, MD, anesthe- siologist and pain specialist at Norwood Hospital, treats pediatric patients. Dr. Aminian pursued a fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital, where she received nationally renowned subspecialty training in childhood pain and now brings that experience into the community setting. "We treat pediatric patients who have chronic headaches and complex regional pain syndrome, as well as orthopedic injuries in adolescents," she says. Dr. Aminian asks local pediatricians to refer patients who experience pain of three months' duration or more. FIVE EXPERIENCED PHYSICIANS TREAT ADULT AND PEDIATRIC PAIN IN A MULTIDISCIPLINARY SETTING. Norwood Hospital's Pain Management Center: Advanced Pain Medicine in a Community Hospital Setting "Chronic pain in childhood is not nor- mal," she says. "At Norwood Hospital Pain Management Center, we offer treatments including physical therapy and excellent psychological support. Many pediatric patients do not receive treatment for pain until they reach adulthood, meaning they may have five or more years' experience of chronic pain. It is very important we identify pain early, when we can effectively treat and care for it." To l e a r n m o r e v i s i t N o r w o o d- Hospital.org/Pain.
